Fantastic Micro-Frameworks and Micro-Libraries for Fun and Profit!
As for the image lightboxes, I have always lacked simplicity for them. I mean not only the visual design, but the overall experience: from implementation to UX. All due respect, but I have never liked any of these light-fancy-face-boxes. They all were solving problems that just don't exist: lots of unwanted features by default, total mess in markup, no native behavior for touch screens. I was working on a project and needed an image lightbox that solves these problems. I needed a lightbox only for images, not video, text, and iframes at once. I made ImageLightbox.js.

The Geolocation API of HTML5 helps in identifying the user’s location, which can be used to provide location specific information or route navigation details to the user.
There are many techniques used to identify the location of the user. A desktop browser generally uses WIFI or IP based positioning techniques whereas a mobile browser uses cell triangulation, GPS, A-GPS, WIFI based positioning techniques, etc. The Geolocation API will use any one of these techniques to identify the user’s location.
The Geolocation API protects the user’s privacy by mandating that the user permission should be sought and obtained before sending the location information of the user to any website. So the user will be prompted with a popover or dialog requesting for the user’s permission to share the location information. The user can accept or deny the request.

Everyone loves LESS. After all, who isn't tired of typing all the browser prefixes to make some kick-ass CSS3? But don't you wish you could organize your LESS/CSS styles into some well-organized libraries, and then just serve a single file to the browser? Or render your page without relying on JavaScript or command-line geekery? Wouldn't it be great if you could just edit LESS, and then save CSS?

Great Instant Documentation Search for webdeveloppers
Humans learn better when they can play with what they're working with, when they can poke at it and understand what happens to B when you change A. The browser provides a wonderful place where examples can be interactive, and yet most documentation for javascript APIs doesn't make use of these capabilities.

A technique, at its core, is a way to carry out a task and, being frontend developers and designers, we have a lot of tasks. That said, we often forget how much this landscape has changed. From 2002 to 2010 our community was rotten with code and resource bloat, hindering performance and maintainability. To overcome this, we created a slew of tips, tricks and hacks we dubbed ‘technique’. We were still accomplishing tasks, just not in the most efficient manner.
Doing a 360, the last few years have seen better standards and standards implementations spring to life, enabling us as a community to develop newer and more advanced ‘techniques’. This new landscape is what’s considered the ‘modern web’.
As ‘Web 2.0’ became stagnant and confusing, so too will the ‘modern web’. Give it time. That said, for now, we can use and abuse the term so long as there is a common understanding of what it represents.
In 2010 the HTML5 specification landed, providing a brand new, semi-standardised web environment. Browsers such as Opera, Firefox, Chrome and Safari embraced this new wave and pushed their dev teams to new limits of standards implementations and API exploration. To give you an idea of how ‘onboard’ these browsers are, check www.html5readiness.com’s visualisations of changing HTML5 support.

These days we have embeddable share and follower buttons for almost every aspect of the web, except of course for GitHub. I wanted to help remedy that, so over the weekend I created a customizable JavaScript button (that uses the GitHub API) for pulling in the watcher counts for links to any repositories you may have in a page. It gracefully degrades, comes in a few different flavours and is available to get now.
All that's needed to use the button is an a link to a specific repository (such as http://github.com/h5bp/html5-boilerplate). It doesn't need to be on your account, it can belong to anyone (which is particularly useful for groups and organizations that share repositories) and it's flexible, so it should work regardless of whether you have 8 watchers or 8,000.

The layout is often invisible but quite important part of your web application. It helps to make applications that know what to do with the available space. Each layout consists of panels. Panels hold the content - HTML or a widget, for example, a grid. They can be easily hidden, shown, resized, removed, refreshed.

Roole is a language that compiles to CSS.
It drew many inspirations from other CSS preprocessing languages like Sass, LESS and Stylus.
The most unique feature of Roole is that it has vendor prefixing built-in, so the language stays dead simple yet being able to prefix some extremely complex rules transparently.
Roole is implemented in JavaScript, so it can be run both on the server side (via node.js) or in a browser (run unit tests to check if Roole works in your browser).

First of all, let’s get the essential question answered: what is Modernizr?
Based on the official site, Modernizr is “A JavaScript library that detects HTML5 and CSS3 features in the user’s browser.”
Although HTML5 and CSS3 are great but many of the new features they have, as we already know by now, are not much applicable in old browsers. Modernizr, helps to address this problem by testing the user’s browser on whether it supports a particular feature. If the feature is “unsupported”, then we can deliver an appropriate script or function to imitate the feature it lacks.

Modular programming is used to break large applications into smaller blocks of manageable code. Module based coding eases the effort for maintenance and increases reusability. However, managing dependencies between modules is a major concern developers face throughout the application development process. RequireJS is one of the most popular frameworks around for managing dependencies between modules. This tutorial examines the need for modularized code, and shows how RequireJS can help.

With legacy browsers, we often see Conditionial statements wrapped around our HTML element, so the browser can use the HTML tag relevant to the browser. Conditionizr steps in to take this conditional approach one step further, detecting those IE versions, and adds the relevant class-name to the HTML tag. This means no more conditional statements on the HTML tag. Conditionizr automates the process.

So here we're collecting all the shims, fallbacks, and polyfills in order to implant html5 functionality in browsers that don't natively support them.
The general idea is that: we, as developers, should be able to develop with the HTML5 apis, and scripts can create the methods and objects that should exist. Developing in this future-proof way means as users upgrade, your code doesn't have to change but users will move to the better, native experience cleanly.
Looking for a way to conditionally load these scripts client-side based on feature detects? See Modernizr. Looking for a guide to writing your own polyfills? See Writing Cross-Browser JavaScript Polyfills.

Leak finder for JavaScript helps web application developers find memory leaks in their JavaScript programs.
In garbage-collected languages, such as JavaScript, you cannot have traditional memory leaks by forgetting to free memory: when all references to an object are dropped, the object is garbage-collected and the memory is freed.
However, JavaScript programs can leak memory by unintentionally retaining references to objects. For example the references can be pointers to objects stored in a data structure in a JavaScript library (e.g., Closure) instead of the application code. If an object is unintentionally retained, all objects it points to are kept alive as well. This will lead to superfluous memory consumption.

This is the first in a series of regular articles that will examine resources in a number of categories, including front-end frameworks like Backbone.js, templating engines like Handlebars.js and a number of others. The number of JavaScript resources is growing every day, which is great for developers, but often it can become confusing or overwhelming to pick which one best suits the situation in hand. Often there's no definitive solution and hopefully this series will provide information and cases where particular solutions are best.

I remember trying to get into starting with Node.js months ago and, to be frank, it wasn’t the simplest process. Installation was a hassle, and pretty much required the use of a Linux of Mac computer. Now, Node.js has evolved to the point where just about anyone can get started using Node.js (maybe not my grandparents, but they don’t even have a computer). Let’s get started!
Solid design patterns are the basic building block for maintainable software applications. If you’ve ever participated in a technical interview, you’ve liked been asked about them. In this tutorial, we’ll take a look at a few patterns that you can start using today.
When building a web application, you oftentimes need to give users the ability to download a piece of data as a file. It could be a backup of configuration settings, reports, or other piece of information that is generated dynamically.

I didn't even know there was such a thing as "seamless" iframes. But there is and they are coming (literally an attribute on the iframe element). Essentially they inherit some styles from outside of them, but are otherwise sandboxed. Perfect for something like Disqus eh? Front end engineer Ben Vinegar from Disqus introduces them and shows some smart ways for emulating them now.
On a recent responsive project, I quickly ran into a new challenge: how to manage JavaScript on a site where the interface and functionality changes at different breakpoints. For example, an image carousel might need to be animated at one breakpoint but turn into a simple image grid at the next; you don't want that JavaScript to still be functioning if someone crosses between them.
Hey did you know that you can flip elements in 3D space with CSS3? You probably should as this has been possible for nearly two years. First only in Webkit browsers – Safari and Chrome, but now in Firefox as well. This means that more than half of the world (that use a non IE browser) can see advanced, CSS driven animations and effects.
Performance optimization is a crucial aspect of building ‘snappy’ client-side applications and something which all developers using jQuery should bear in mind. In this talk, we're going to take a look at some of the best practices, tips and tricks for improving the performance of your jQuery code in 2011 with some quick wins and a few new surprises along the way.
Google's Map API is one of the most popular JavaScript libraries on the web, used by more than 350,000 websites. And with good reason – it's powerful and for six years was absolutely free. It spawned a wave of map mashup websites (who initially hacked the then-private API, which Google not only tolerated but encouraged).

Password cracking and JavaScript are very rarely mentioned in the same sentence. JavaScript is a bad choice for the job due to two primary reasons - it cannot run continuously for long periods without freezing the browser and it is way slower than native code.
HTML5 takes care of the first problem with WebWorkers, now any website can start a background JavaScript thread that can run continuously without causing stability issues for the browser. That is one hurdle passed.

One of the problems hacktivists ran into when trying to disseminate useful information to people in Syria and Egypt was how to get through to people when DNS and web access are being filtered or outright blocked. Putting up web pages containing phone numbers of ISPs volunteering dialup access was something of a crapshoot because there was no guarantee that people would be able to view them. Someone (I don't remember whom) hit on the idea of contacting sysadmins in the Middle East by leaving messages in the access and error logs of their web servers. This works but pumping an entire list of phone numbers, usernames, and passwords by hand over HTTP requests gets old fast, to say the least.
Ajax commonly is thought of as single language, but in truth AJAX is a combination of more than one technology. It uses HTML and CSS. By using AJAX we can create real-time feedback to our users using server-side validation scripts. Its becoming commonplace in many design niches as its very flexible, easy on the eye and can really improve user experience due to its fast response times. I have gathered a list of great Ajax tutorials from across the web which will allow you to experiment and get you started with Ajax, the tutorials are superb and answer most questions you may have.
Style switchers have become a popular feature on websites these days. CSS style sheets allow a Web Designer to change the look and feel of a website with little effort. Some sites use “Day” and “Night” type of style switchers that automatically change the site theme based on the time of day.

Saying the phrase "user agent" or "user agent string" is tantamount to saying a swear word. Developers used to use the user agent to detect if a browser had a given feature, instead of, you know, checking to see if the feature actually existed via object or property detection. Those days are behind us though, but one of the web's dirty secrets is that the user agent still has many uses.
